Topic: Risk Management of Outdoor Activities

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and evaluate potential risks associated with outdoor activities and implement appropriate measures to reduce or eliminate those risks.

Materials

• Handout with common risks associated with various outdoor activities (e.g. hiking, camping, backpacking, climbing, skiing, etc.)
• Handout with tips for managing those risks

Warm-up

• Ask students to share any previous outdoor experience they may have.
• Ask students to share any risks or dangers they have experienced while participating in outdoor activities.
• Lead a discussion on how to manage potential risks while participating in outdoor activities.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of risk management and explain that it is the process of identifying, assessing, and controlling risks while participating in outdoor activities.
• Discuss the importance of proper etiquette and safety while participating in outdoor activities.
• Provide students with a handout that lists proper etiquette and safety guidelines for various outdoor activities.
• Lead a discussion on the importance of following the guidelines on the handout.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and give each group an outdoor activity (e.g. hiking, camping).
• Have students research the proper etiquette and safety guidelines for their assigned activity.
• Have each group present their findings to the class and discuss the importance of following the guidelines.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose an outdoor activity that they plan on participating in during the upcoming summer break.
