Topic: Be a good sport

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this unit, students will be able to explain what it means to be a good sport and provide examples of good sports.

Materials

• Whiteboard and markers
• Handout with example sentences and vocabulary words

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever played a sport or watched a sport being played.
• Ask them to share their experiences and what it means to be a good sport.

Direct Instruction

• Define the term "sport."
• Explain the importance of being a good sport, including the benefits of having a good attitude and being a team player.
• Provide examples of behavior that is considered to be good sportsmanship, such as congratulating the winner and accepting defeat graciously.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet that includes questions about good sportsmanship.

Examples could include:

• What does it mean to be a good sport?
• What are the benefits of having a good attitude and being a team player?
• What behavior is considered to be good sportsmanship?
• How can you demonstrate good sportsmanship?

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a sport that they are interested in or participate in regularly.
• Have them write a short essay about what it means to be a good sport, and how they demonstrate good sportsmanship.
• Encourage students to include specific examples from their own experience.

Closure

• Have students share their essays with the class.
• Discuss the importance of good sportsmanship and how it can affect the outcome of a game or competition.
• Ask students to reflect on their own behavior during sporting events and how they can be better athletes and better sports.

Assessment

• Observe students during a sporting event and provide feedback on their behavior.
• Collect and review their essays as outlined in the independent practice activity.
• Use this lesson as a part of a larger unit on sportsmanship.
