Topic:Area and perimeter

Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand the concept of area and how to calculate area using the formula A=lw
• To understand the concept of perimeter and how to calculate perimeter using the formula P=lw+tw

Materials

• Graphic calculator
• Whiteboard and markers
• Handouts with examples of area and perimeter problems

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what area and perimeter are and give brief definitions.
• Ask students to give examples of area and perimeter in their daily lives.
• Ask students if they have ever had to calculate the area or perimeter of a space in school and if so, how did they do it.

Direct Instruction

• Show students some examples of figures and ask them to calculate the area or perimeter using their calculators or pencil and paper.
• Explain the different methods for calculating area and perimeter and demonstrate how to use them.
• Review the formulas for area and perimeter and make sure students understand how to use them.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to solve a series of problems using the area and perimeter formulas.
• The teacher can walk around to assist and check student work.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based activity in which they measure and calculate the area and perimeter of a real-world object and draw a -graph of their results. This could be a home or school project, or the students could create a poster or presentation to share with the class.

Closure

• Review the concepts of area and perimeter and how to calculate them.
• Ask the students to share their project-based -results and discuss any surprises or challenges they encountered.

Assessment:

• Observe the students during the measurement lab and fill out a feedback form evaluating their participation and understanding of the concepts.
• Collect and grade the students' finished measurement projects.
• Administer a quiz to assess their understanding of area and perimeter.
