Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand the different branches of math used in aviation
• To be able to apply the concepts and formulas of each branch of math to aviation-related problems

Materials

• Computer with internet connection
• Textbook(s) on math used in aviation

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about math used in aviation.
• Ask students to provide examples of math used in aviation.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of branches of mathematics and explain that there are many different types of math that are used in aviation.
• Use a whiteboard or an interactive projector to list the different branches of mathematics and explain how each one is used in aviation.
• Examples of branches of mathematics include:
• Algebra: used to solve for unknown variables and to analyze data
• Geometry: used to solve for unknown measurements and to calculate distances and areas
• Trigonometry: used to calculate angles and to determine the height, distance, and speed of an aircraft
• Statistics: used to analyze and interpret data, such as aircraft performance and passenger statistics
• Ask students to brainstorm additional examples of how each branch of mathematics is used in aviation.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups to solve a mathematical problem using one of the branches of mathematics listed.
• Provide examples of possible problems and have students work through them together, providing assistance and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a branch of mathematics to focus on for a project-based independent practice activity.
• Students should research and identify a real-life application of the branch of mathematics they have chosen.
• Students should create a presentation or report to communicate their findings to the class.

Closure

• Review the different branches of mathematics and the real-life applications in aviation.
• Ask students to share their presentations or reports with the class.

Assessment

• Observe students during the mini-lesson and during their independent practice.
• Collect and grade their presentations or reports for accuracy and understanding of the topic.
