Content: Why is mapping?

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the need for mapping and the different types of mapping.

Materials

  • Pens or pencils
  • Paper
  • Maps of different regions or countries
  • Information on different types of mapping (political, topographical, transport, etc.)

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever used a map to get from one place to another.
  • Ask them to describe the different features of the map that helped them to navigate.
  • Introduce the concept of mapping and explain that it is the process of representing the physical or political features of a place on a map.

Direct Instruction

  • Show students examples of different types of maps, such as topographic, political, and road maps.
  • Explain the purpose of each type of map and how it is designed to represent different features of the area being mapped.
  • Explain the process of creating a map, including how data is collected, how it is organized and how it is then represented on the map.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to create a simple map of their neighborhood, using a provided template and following the steps outlined above.
  • Have students share their maps with the class and discuss how the process and resulting map illustrates the concept of mapping.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to create a more detailed map of their school or campus, using a provided template and following the steps outlined above.

Closure

  • As a class, review the key concepts and skills learned during the lesson, including the importance of mapping and geographic coordinates, the steps for creating a map using a GIS, and the use of mapping tools and resources.
  • Discuss how mapping can be used in a variety of real-world applications, from creating maps for work or school projects to using mapping tools like Google Maps to find local businesses and attractions.
