Materials

  • Italian alphabet chart or poster
  • Alphabet cards (one for each student)
  • Italian words with corresponding English translations (one for each letter)

Warm-up

  • Introduce the topic of the lesson by asking students if they know how to read and pronounce the alphabet in their native language. Ask them to share any tips or tricks they use to do so.

Direct Instruction

  • Start by saying the name of the alphabet in Italian (l'alfabeto italiano).
  • Introduce the 26 letters of the alphabet, saying their names and showing them on the board.
  • Demonstrate how to pronounce each letter, using the phonetic alphabet if necessary.
  • Provide practice opportunities for each letter, allowing students to repeat the pronunciation after you.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a set of flash cards with the letters of the alphabet written on them.
  • Have the groups take turns holding the flash cards up and having a partner say the pronunciation.
  • Encourage discussion about any letters that are pronounced differently than expected.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based activity to practice their alphabet pronunciation.
  • Example: Have students create a short video teaching their classmates the pronunciation of the alphabet.
  • Students can use a video editing program to animate and voice-over the letters and can include demonstrations of the pronunciation and/or helpful mnemonics.

Closure

  • Review the letters of the alphabet and their pronunciations.
  • Ask students to share any mnemonics or strategies they found helpful for learning the alphabet.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of mnemonics and strategies to learn the letters of the alphabet.
  • Administer a quiz to assess students' understanding of the letters and their pronunciations, using the corresponding letters as prompts.
