Topic: Understanding and developing emotional intelligence

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define emotional intelligence and explain its importance.
  • Students will be able to identify their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of their emotional intelligence and develop a plan for improving their emotional intelligence.

Materials

  • Handouts defining emotional intelligence and its components
  • Space for students to write down their own strengths and weaknesses in terms of emotional intelligence
  • Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-Up

  • Ask the students to share their experiences with emotions and managing emotions. Which emotions are they most comfortable with? Which are they least comfortable with? Why?
  • Have the students discuss how emotions can influence our behavior and how we can better manage our emotions.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of emotional intelligence and explain that it refers to our ability to recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions and the emotions of others.
  • Discuss the components of emotional intelligence, including self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, and empathy.
  • Use examples to illustrate each component and how it can impact our behavior.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a scenario to discuss.
  • Have each group discuss how the character in the scenario might demonstrate each component of emotional intelligence.
  • Encourage students to use examples from real life examples and discuss how they might think they would behave differently in these situations.

Independent Practice

  • For their project, students will create a short skit or acting performance that demonstrates all four components of emotional intelligence.
  • Students should consider the personality traits, circumstances, and context of their characters and how these affect their emotional intelligence.

Closure:

  • Review the four components of emotional intelligence and how they play a role in our day-to-day lives.
  • Ask students to share their projects and discuss what they learned about emotional intelligence.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice task and jot down any instances of students demonstrating the four components of emotional intelligence.
  • Have students turn in their independent practice tasks and discuss their findings with them.
