Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define the elements of creative nonfiction, including voice, narrative structure, dialogue, and detail.

Materials

  • Examples of creative nonfiction texts (e.g. essays, memoirs, articles)
  • Handouts with definitions and examples of each element (voice, narrative structure, dialogue, detail)

Warm-up

  • Have students brainstorm a list of words or phrases that describe creative writing.
  • Write their ideas on the board.
  • Review the list and ask students to clarify or add to it if necessary.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of creative nonfiction and explain that it is a genre of writing that combines the elements of creative writing and nonfiction writing.
  • Provide a brief overview of the elements of creative writing (e.g. imagery, figurative language, etc.) and nonfiction writing (e.g. sourcing, interviewing, etc.).
  • Use examples to illustrate each element and discuss how they work together in creative nonfiction.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to write a short creative nonfiction piece using the elements discussed in class.
  • Have each group share their piece with the class and discuss how they used the elements of creative nonfiction.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic and write a longer piece of creative nonfiction using the elements of creative nonfiction discussed in class.

Students can use the template provided or create their own format for their writing.

Closure

  • Have students share their completed pieces of creative nonfiction with the class and discuss how they used the elements of creative nonfiction in their writing.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice to see if they are able to identify the elements of creative nonfiction in their writing.
  • Evaluate the completed pieces of creative nonfiction to see if students have successfully used the elements of creative nonfiction in their writing.
