Art Lesson Plan for 1st Grade Example Students

Topic: Colors and Shapes

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and name colors and shapes.

Materials

  • Colorful pieces of art from a variety of different artists
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to close their eyes and think of a color that they have seen before. Write down their answers on the whiteboard.
  • Next, ask students to think of a shape that they have seen before. Again, write down their answers on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the term "art" and explain that it is the process of creating beautiful and creative things using materials such as paint, clay, and pencils.
  • Show students some examples of art and discuss the different colors and shapes that are used in them.
  • Ask students to name some colors and shapes that they see in the examples.

Guided Practice

  • Provide each student with a piece of paper and colored pencils and have them create a piece of art that includes at least one red object, one blue object, and one yellow object.
  • As students work, walk around and provide support and guidance as needed.

Independent Practice

  • After all students have completed their art, have them lay their pieces out on a table and walk around the room to observe and appreciate the various pieces of art.

Closure

  • Have students share their Art with the class.
  • Ask them to explain their pieces of Art and their ideas behind them.
  • Have a class discussion about what the students learned about themselves and others through creating their Art.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the Art closure activity to see if they are creating pieces of Art and explaining their ideas behind them.
  • Listen to their explanations and discussions during the closure activity to assess their understanding of the lesson.
