Free 12th Grade Introduction To Geology Lesson Plan

Topic: Introduction to Geology

Objectives & Outcome

  • To understand the basic principles of geology, including the structure of Earth, its history, and its physical and chemical processes.

Materials

  • Handouts with diagrams and descriptions of Earth's structure and history
  • Colored pencils or pens for drawing diagrams

Warm-up

  • Ask students to describe what they know about Earth and its features, such as mountains, oceans, and deserts. As they share their ideas, write them on the board.
  • Then, ask students to explain how they think Earth got to be the way it is today.

Direct Instruction

  • Begin by briefly introducing the concept of geology and explaining that it is the study of Earth and its features.
  • Then, present the five fundamental concepts of geology:
  • 1. Earth is a dynamic system that is constantly changing over time.
  • 2. Earth's features, such as mountains, valleys, and rivers, are the result of physical and chemical processes that take place at the surface and at depth.
  • 3. Earth's history can be understood through the study of its rocks and fossils.
  • 4. The composition, structure, and mechanics of Earth are explained by physics and chemistry.
  • 5. The study of geology helps us understand our planet and its resources better and can be used to address issues such as natural hazards, resource extraction, and environmental conservation.
  • Next, introduce the geologic time scale, which is a way of organizing Earth's history into specific periods based on the fossils found in rock layers.
  • Use the handout and illustrations to explain the different eras, epochs, and periods, and discuss some of the key events that occurred during each time period.
  • Then, introduce the three main types of rock: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.
  • Explain that igneous rock is formed when molten material cools and solidifies, sedimentary rock is formed when layers of sediment are compressed and cemented together, and metamorphic rock is formed when existing rock is subjected to heat and pressure and transformed into a different type of rock.
  • Finally, discuss some of the key features of Earth, such as mountains, oceans, and deserts, and explain how they are formed.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group one of the fundamental concepts of geology listed above.
  • Have the groups work together to create a short presentation that explains their assigned concept.
  • During class time, have each group present their presentation to the class and engage in a discussion about the concept.
  • As a follow up, have students write a short summary of the concept on a post-it note and attach it to the corresponding poster.

Please see the attached documents for a sample presentation on the concept of Earth as a dynamic system and a sample worksheet for summarizing a fundamental concept of geology.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to create their own poster on a fundamental concept of geology.
  • Students should use their knowledge of the fundamental concepts of geology to create a visual representation of their chosen concept. They can use -computer software, drawing tools, or whatever medium they prefer.
  • Encourage students to be creative and have fun with their posters.

Closure

  • Have each student present their poster to the class.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the importance of the concept they chose and how it relates to geology as a whole.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the class activity and presentation to assess their understanding of the concept and their ability to apply it to geology.
  • Evaluate the posters for clarity and accuracy.
