Topic: The Family

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define the term "family" and identify the different members of a family.

Materials

  • Pictures of different types of families (e.g. married parents with children, extended family, single-parent family)
  • Chart paper and pens

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have a family. What type of family do they have?
  • Write down their answers on the chart paper.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that a family is a group of people who live together and care for each other.
  • Show students pictures of different types of families, such as families with one parent, two parents, or two parents and multiple children.
  • Discuss the characteristsics of each type of family (e.g. the responsibilities of parents differ depending on the type of family).

  • Have students draw a picture of their family and write a short description of what makes their family special.

  • Review the characteristsics of a family and discuss any additional examples students may have come up with during the lesson.
