Topic: Greetings in French

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use relevant greetings in French in different contexts, including formal and informal situations.

Materials

  • French language materials (such as a textbook or a video with French language dialogues)
  • French-English dictionary
  • Writing materials (e.g. a pen and paper)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to raise their hands if they can already greet people in French.
  • Have a few students share their greetings in French with the class.
  • Ask the rest of the students to look in their French-English dictionary for the translations of the following common French greetings: "Bonjour," "Salut," "Bonsoir," and "Au revoir."

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the French subjunctive.
  • Explain that the subjunctive is a mood that is used in French to express uncertain or hypothetical situations.
  • Give examples of how to use the subjunctive in different contexts, such as wishes, demands, and suggestions.
  • Review the greetings in French, this time using the subjunctive where appropriate.

Guided Practice

  • Give students a few examples of hypothetical situations in French and have them generate their own sentences using the subjunctive.
  • Have students work in pairs to provide each other with feedback on their use of the subjunctive.

Independent Practice

  • Provide students with a set of French greetings and have them translate the greetings into English.
  • Have students create a set of flash cards with the French greetings on one side and the English translation on the other.
  • Have students practice using the flash cards to greet one another in French.

Closure

  • Review the different greetings that were learned during the lesson.
  • Ask students to share a time when they used a French greeting in a real-life situation.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided and independent practice activities to see if they are using the different greetings correctly.
  • Collect and review the worksheets to assess students' understanding of the lesson.
