Topic: Self-Description and Basic Information Exchange

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to describe themselves using American Sign Language.
• Students will be able to ask basic questions to get information about another person.

Materials

• American Sign Language vocabulary for self-description and basic information exchange
• Whiteboard and markers
• Printed copies of the vocabulary for each student

Warm-up

• Ask students to partner up with a partner.
• Give each student a printed copy of the vocabulary.
• Have them go through the vocabulary and match each sign with the English equivalent.
• After a few minutes, have a few pairs share their answers with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of describing oneself and asking questions.
• Use the vocabulary list and demonstrate the signs for each word.
• Show examples of how to use the signs to ask questions and describe oneself.
• Demonstrate how to use the signs for basic personal information (name, age, etc.).
• Practice the signs with the class, correcting any mistakes as you go.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a copy of the personal information sheet.
• Have the students use the signs they have learned to ask questions and describe themselves to their group mates.
• Have the groups share their answers with the class and discuss any differences or difficulties that they encountered.

Independent Practice

• Have the students individually choose a preferred leisurely activity and describe it using the personal information sheet.
• Have the students use the signs they have learned to ask questions about each other's preferred leisurely activities.
• Have the students exchange personal information sheets and check their answers.

Closure

• Review the signs for the personal information questions and answers.
• Have the students practice asking each other personal questions using ASL.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of ASL and their understanding of the personal information questions and answers.
