Topic: recycling

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand what recycling is and how they can help increase recycling at school.

Materials

  • Pictures of different types of recycling (e.g. paper, plastic, cans)
  • Recycling bins or containers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever seen or heard of recycling before. What do they know about it?
  • Show the students the pictures of different types of recycling and ask them to name what they see.
  • Ask the students if they know why it is important to recycle.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that recycling is important because it helps us to save our natural resources and prevents waste from piling up.
  • Show the students the different types of recycling and explain how each one works. For example, explain that glass is recycled into new glass and can be used to make new bottles or glassware, while plastic can be recycled into new plastic products.
  • Explain that we can help recycle at school by putting our recycling in the proper bins and making sure to not put any trash in with the recycling.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to sort different items into the correct recycling bins.
  • Have the teacher or assistant monitor the students while they work to ensure that they are making the correct choices and are not mixing trash in with the recycling.
  • When the sorting is finished, lead a short discussion about how recycling helps us to save our natural resources and prevents waste from piling up.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students draw a picture of something they recycle at home.
  • Have the students write a short sentence about how recycling their picture helps the environment.

Closure

  • Review the importance of recycling and how it helps the environment.
  • Ask the students to share one thing they learned about recycling during today's lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the sorting activity and note the types of items they are able to correctly identify as recyclable.
  • Ask the students to explain how recycling helps the environment and encourages them to give suggestions on how they can personally help in their own communities.
