Reading Strategies Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: Reading strategies

Objectives & Outcomes

• To be able to create a plan about reading use the pre, during and after reading activities or the method presentation, practice and production.
• To improve reading comprehension and critical thinking.

Materials

• Various texts (fiction, non-fiction, articles, etc.)
• Note cards (can be physical or virtual)
• Post-it notes

Warm-up

• Ask students to share what they do before, during and after reading a text. Write their responses on the board.
• Discuss the importance of using effective reading strategies to improve reading comprehension and critical thinking.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the different types of reading strategies, including pre-reading, during reading, and after reading.
• Demonstrate each strategy using a text, and explain how it helps improve reading comprehension and critical thinking.
• Encourage students to try the strategies using their own texts, and provide feedback on their effectiveness.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups, and give each group a text to read.
• Have each group discuss the text and identify key ideas using pre-reading strategies.
• Encourage students to use during reading to focus on specific parts of the text, and use after reading to think about the overall meaning of the text.
• Have students share their insights with the class, and discuss any differences in interpretation using the different reading strategies.

Independent Practice

• Give students a text to read on their own, without the help of their teacher.
• Encourage students to use their pre-reading strategies to focus on key ideas and prepare for reading the text.
• Have students use during reading to focus on specific parts of the text, and use after reading to think about the overall meaning of the text.
• Have students write a brief summary of the main ideas of the text and explain how they used the different reading strategies to understand the text.

Closure

• Review the different reading strategies and how they can be used to understand a text.
• Ask students to reflect on their own reading behaviors and how they can use the different reading strategies to improve their understanding of a text.

Assessment

• Observe students during independent practice and provide feedback on their use of reading strategies and their improvement in understanding a text.
• Collect and review the posters created during independent practice to assess students' understanding of the different reading strategies and their ability to apply them in their own reading.
