Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to analyze the language and structure used in a reading passage to maintain the interest and attention of the reader.

Materials

• A reading passage on a topic of interest to the students
• A PowerPoint presentation with examples of language and structure used in the reading passage

Warm-up

• Ask the students to list three ways that a writer can keep a reader interested in a text.
• Review the list of answers with the students and discuss how each strategy uses language and structure to interest and inform the reader.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of language and structure as tools that writers can use to interest and inform the reader.
• Use examples from the text to demonstrate how language and structure can be used to interest and inform the reader.
• Emphasize the importance of using language and structure effectively to interest and inform the reader.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with copies of the text they will be analyzing and a handout with questions to guide their analysis.
• Have students work in small groups to analyze the text using the questions on the handout to guide their analysis.
