Topic: Pronunciation

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to correctly pronounce complex words and phrases.

Materials

• Complex words and phrases with unusual pronunciation
• A chart with the pronunciations written out
• A recorder or pen and paper for each student

Warm-Up

• Review the pronunciation of simple words and phrases.
• Ask students to recite the pronunciations of several simple words and phrases, such as "cat," "car," "door," etc.
• As a class, discuss the importance of pronunciation, and the impacts mispronunciation can have on communication.

Direct Instruction

• Review the diacritical marks used to indicate pronunciation in English.
• Introduce the pronunciation of the letters in the English alphabet.
• Demonstrate how to pronounce the vowel sounds in English, using the IPA chart as a reference.
• Introduce the pronunciation of the most common consonant combinations in English, using the IPA chart as a reference.
• Practice pronouncing words and phrases with diacritical marks, using the IPA chart as a reference.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs or small groups.
• Give each group a list of words or phrases to pronounce, using the IPA chart as a reference.
• Have each group demonstrate their pronunciation to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a word or phrase from the vocabulary list or a phrase they hear in class and use the IPA chart to -pronounce it.
• Encourage them to use their pronunciation in conversation.

Closure

• Review the IPA chart and the pronunciation of the words and phrases studied.
• Ask students to share anything they learned about the pronunciation of English.

Assessment

• Observe students during the group and independent practice activities and provide feedback on their pronunciation.
• Evaluate students' presentations on the pronunciation of the word or phrase they chose, paying attention to their use of the IPA and their pronunciation.
