Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the components of a personal insight essay and write a personal insight essay.

Warm-up

• Ask students to think about a time when they learned something new about themselves or about someone close to them.
• Have students share their experiences with the class and discuss what they learned about themselves or about someone else.
• Ask students to think about a time when they had to make a difficult decision or deal with a difficult situation.
• Have students share their experiences with the class and discuss how they handled the situation.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of personal insight questions and explain that these questions are designed to ask students to share their personal experiences and perspectives.
• Discuss the format for writing a personal insight essay, including the need to provide specific examples and details to support the main idea.
• Review the structure for a personal insight essay, including introductory paragraph, body paragraphs, and conclusion.

Guided Practice

• Give students a few personal insight questions to work on and provide guidance on how to develop a strong essay response.
• Demonstrate how to use the Five W's (who, what, when, where, why) and H to develop specific examples and details to support the main idea.
• Help students organize their thoughts and ideas onto a rough draft of their essay.

Independent Practice

• Students will work on their rough drafts and use the guidance provided to strengthen their essay responses.
• Encourage students to ask questions if they have any difficulty with the process or content.

Closure

• Review the main points of the process for writing an effective personal insight essay.
• Encourage students to share their rough drafts with a peer or teacher for feedback.
