Free Narrative Tenses Lesson Plan for 12th Grade Students

Topic: Narrative Tenses

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and use the different narrative tenses in their writing.

Materials:

  • Chart with the names of the narrative tenses (present perfect, past perfect, present perfect progressive, past perfect progressive, present perfect subjunctive, and past perfect subjunctive) and example sentences for each tense
  • Pencils and paper for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a recent or memorable event that they have experienced.
  • Have them write a brief description of the event in the past tense, using complete sentences.
  • Then, ask them to rewrite the description in the present perfect tense, using complete sentences.
  • Finally, have them rewrite the description in the past perfect tense, using complete sentences.
  • Review the different names of the tenses (present perfect, past perfect, present perfect progressive, past perfect progressive, present perfect subjunctive, and past perfect subjunctive) and ask students to explain the differences between them.

Direct Instruction
