Topic: My toe is bleeding

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To understand the uses of common descriptors of pain, soreness, and hurt in English, and their corresponding verbs and adjectives.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with examples of pain, soreness, and hurt
  • Examples of real-life pain, soreness, and hurt (e.g. damaged toe, sprained ankle, aching back)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share an experience of pain, soreness, or hurt that they have experienced in the past. Allow several students to share their experiences, and write them on the board.
  • Review the examples of real-life pain, soreness, and hurt and ask students to identify the type of pain, soreness, or hurt that each example describes.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of figurative language, and explain that it is a way of describing something using words that are not literal.
  • Provide examples of figurative language, such as metaphors, similes, and personification, and have students identify the type of figurative language in each example.
  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of additional figurative language examples and have a volunteer share their list with the class.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to identify figurative language in the passages provided, and discuss their findings with the class.
  • Have a volunteer share one of their identified examples of figurative language with the class, and explain how it is used to help describe the feeling of pain.

Independent Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups, and assign each group one of the passages provided.
  • Have each group re-write the passage using only literal language, avoiding any figurative language.
  • Have each group present their re-written passage to the class, and discuss the effectiveness of using figurative language vs. literal language to describe the feeling of pain.

Closure

  • Review the importance of figurative language in poetry and literature, and the role it plays in helping us to describe feelings and emotions in a more vivid and imaginative way.
  • Discuss the importance of using figurative language in our everyday speech and writing, as it can help us to convey our thoughts and ideas in a more colorful and engaging way.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and give feedback on their use of figurative language in their given paragraph or essay.
  • Collect and grade the paragraphs and essays submitted as part of the independent practice activity, evaluating students' use of figurative language and their ability to effectively convey thoughts and ideas.
