Free 12th Grade Literary Merit In Fiction Texts Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Literary Merit in Fiction Texts

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify and define literary merit in fiction texts.
  • Students will be able to identify and provide examples of literary merit in fiction texts.

Materials

  • A selection of fiction texts
  • Handout with definition and examples of literary merit

Warm-up

  • Have students complete a brief reading survey on their favorite fiction text. Ask them to answer questions about the characters, plot, and setting.
  • After a few students have shared their responses, ask the class to think about what makes a fiction text "good" or "engaging." What is literary merit?

Direct Instruction

  • Divide the class into groups of 2-3 and give each group a copy of the reading survey.
  • Have the groups work together to come up with a definition of literary merit. Encourage them to use the reading survey as a starting point and to add their own thoughts and ideas.
  • When the groups have reached a consensus on a definition, have them write it down on a poster board or large piece of paper. Encourage them to provide examples from their favorite fiction texts to support their definition.

Guided Practice

  • Using the definition of literary merit the groups came up with, have them discuss a specific fiction text they have read and analyzed for literary merit.
  • Have the students share their thoughts and insights on the text, using the definition they developed as a guide. Encourage them to support their responses with examples from the text.
  • As a class, discuss the different examples and insights shared by the groups.

Independent Practice

  • For their final project, have the students choose a different fiction text to analyze for literary merit on their own.
  • Have them write a brief (1-2 page) analysis of the text, focusing on the different aspects of literary merit they have identified.
  • Encourage them to use specific examples from the text to support their analysis.

Closure:

  • As a class, review the different aspects of literary merit and how they were identified in the analysis of the various fiction texts.
  • Discuss the importance of assessing literary merit in fiction texts, and how it can help us understand and appreciate the more "complex" works of literature.

Assessment:

  • Collect and grade the group presentations as a formative assessment, and the independent practice as a summative assessment.
  • Use the class discussion as a form of assessment, paying special attention to students who may be struggling to understand the concept of literary merit and how it applies to fiction texts.
