Topic: simple present tense

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to use the simple present tense correctly in writing and speaking.

Materials

• whiteboard and markers
• handouts with examples of sentences using the simple present tense
• writing paper and pencils or pens

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of the simple present tense before. Ask them to describe what it is and how it is used.
• Write the following sentences on the whiteboard:
• I go to school everyday.
• We play soccer every weekend.
• You study hard every night.
• Have students read the sentences aloud and correct any mistakes they find.

Direct Instruction

• Review the present tense and its uses in French.
• Explain that the simple present tense is used to talk about habits, regular actions, and present situations.
• Demonstrate how to conjugate regular -er, -ir, and -re verbs in the simple present tense.
• Model how to use the simple present tense in different contexts, such as giving instructions, making predictions, and describing habits.
• Have students practice conjugating -er, -ir, and -re verbs in the simple present tense.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs and provide them with a list of common -er, -ir, and -re verbs.
• Have them conjugate the verbs in the simple present tense and use them in sentences, such as giving instructions, making predictions, and describing habits.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one verb from each group and use it in a sentence. Encourage them to be creative and use the verb in a way that is relevant to their lives.
• Ask students to share their sentences with the class and discuss the difference between using a verb in a literal sense and using it in a figurative sense.

Closure

• Review the concept of the simple present tense and how it can be used to talk about regular, routine activities.
• Ask students to share one thing they did today that they consider a routine activity and explain how they used the simple present tense to talk about it.

Assessment:

• Have students write a short paragraph about something they did today that was a routine activity, using the simple present tense to talk about it. Evaluate their use of the tense and the accuracy of their grammar and vocabulary.
