Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this course, the students will be able to understand and use basic academic English expressions and vocabulary in their studies.

Materials

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to introduce themselves and tell a little about their background and what they are studying at the moment.
  • Write the names of the students on the board and ask the students to pair up with a classmate with a similar background.
  • Have the students work together to come up with a list of academic English expressions and vocabulary that they think might be helpful in their studies.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of the importance of using appropriate English in academic writing.
  • Explain the difference between formal and informal English and give some examples of each.
  • Discuss the importance of using precise and accurate English in academic writing.
  • Review the list of academic English expressions and vocabulary that the students have come up with.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into small groups.
  • Give each group a piece of paper and a pen.
  • Ask the students to write a short paragraph using only academic English expressions and vocabulary.
  • Have the students read their paragraphs out loud to the class and discuss any issues that they might have with their use of English.
  • Go through the paragraphs with the class and explain any difficult or unusual expressions.

Independent Practice

  • Ask the students to find a news article on the Internet that is written in English.
  • Have the students read the article and fill in the blanks in a worksheet with the missing vocabulary from the article.
  • Have the students hand in the worksheets to the teacher for grading.

Closure

  • Review the new vocabulary that was learned during the lesson.
  • Ask the students to give one new word that they learned during the lesson and explain its meaning.

Assessment:

  • Ask the students to write a short paragraph using at least two of the new words they learned in the lesson. The paragraph must make sense and show an understanding of the new words.
  • Collect the students' paragraphs and use them to assess their understanding of the new words and their ability to use them in a sentence.
