Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify the key characteristics of Anglo Saxon culture and how it influenced the development of English literature.

Materials

• Handouts with information about the Anglo Saxon culture, including its historical context and key characteristics
• Examples of English literature that reflect the influence of the Anglo Saxon culture

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a culture that is unfamiliar to them.
• Have them raise their hand if they can name at least three key characteristics of the culture.
• Record their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the Anglo-Saxon culture, its key characteristics, and its geographical location.
• Explain that Anglo-Saxon culture was a Germanic culture that was established in England during the 5th and 6th centuries AD, following the settlement of Germanic tribes, including the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes, who invaded and conquered the native Celtic population.
