Topic: Sustainable Work Practices in Childcare

Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the importance of sustainable work practices in childcare
• Identify common sustainable work practices in childcare and explain how they can be implemented

Materials

• Handouts with examples of sustainable work practices (e.g. recycling, composting, reducing energy consumption)
• Activities for practice (e.g. brainstorming ideas for sustainable work practices, creating a sustainability action plan)

Warm-up

• Have the students write down three things they do at work that are sustainable (e.g. turn off lights when they leave a room, use energy-efficient appliances).
• Circulate among the students and ask them to share their sustainable work practices with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Define sustainable work practices and explain why they are important (e.g. they conserve resources and help reduce environmental impacts).
• Show examples of how to incorporate sustainable work practices into daily activities (e.g. using rechargeable batteries instead of disposables, recycling).

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to brainstorm ways to incorporate sustainable work practices into their daily activities.
• Have each pair share their ideas with the class and discuss why each idea is or is not a sustainable work practice.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one sustainable work practice to implement in their daily activities.
• Have students create a visual representation (e.g. poster, graphic organizer, etc.) to help them remember and remind others in the childcare center of their chosen practice.

Closure

• Have students share their visual representation with the class and discuss the benefits of their chosen practice and how it can help create a more sustainable childcare center.
• Review the six sustainable work practices and discuss how they can be implemented in a childcare center.

Assessment

• Evaluate students' visual representations and written reflection on their chosen practice to assess their understanding of the sustainability concept and their ability to apply it in a childcare center.
