Topic: Using Spreadsheets

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to create and manipulate spreadsheet data to solve problems.

Materials

• Computer with a spreadsheets software (e.g. Microsoft Excel) installed
• Example spreadsheet problems for practice

Warm-up

• Ask students to think about a problem they have encountered recently that could be solved with a spreadsheet.
• Have them brainstorm a list of the different pieces of information they would need to collect in order to solve the problem.
• Share examples of spreadsheets (e.g. a budget, a schedule, a list of tasks) and have students brainstorm how they could use each to solve a problem.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of a spreadsheet as a way of organizing and manipulating data in a digital format.
• Demonstrate how to create a spreadsheet and enter data, including basic functions such as sorting, filtering, and formatting.
• Show students how to use formulas to create calculations and how to manipulate data in different ways.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to create a simple spreadsheet with at least one calculated value.
• Walk around the room to provide assistance and support as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a real-world application for a spreadsheet and create a project to demonstrate their understanding of the concept. This could be a report, a presentation, a website, or any other format that suits their learning styles and interests.

Closure

• Have students reflect on the importance of spreadsheets in business, and discuss how they can use them in their own future careers.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of spreadsheets in a business context.
