Free 12th Grade Understanding Google Analytics 4 Lesson Plan

Topic: Understanding Google Analytics 4

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to analyze data in Google Analytics and understand how to use the tool to analyze web traffic and understand how users are interacting with a website.

Materials

  • Google Analytics account for each student
  • Computer or laptop for each student
  • Projector or large screen for the teacher

Warm-up

  • Ask students what they know about Google Analytics. What are the benefits of using the tool?
  • Have students search for a familiar website (e.g. a favorite website, their school website) and open the Google Analytics page for that site.
  • Ask students to look at the different sections on the page and see if they can identify what each part is for.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the different sections of the Google Analytics page (Audience, Content, Behavior, Acquisition).
  • Explain the purpose of each section, and provide examples of how to use the data in each section to make decisions.
  • For example, in the Audience section, you can see the demographics of your audience and tailor your content and marketing efforts accordingly. In the Behavior section, you can see which pages are the most popular and how long visitors are spending on your site, which can help you optimize the site for user experience.

Guided Practice

  • Have students go through a specific website in their class and use Google Analytics to answer a question (e.g. "Which content pieces are the most popular?").
  • Have students present their findings to the class and discuss how they used the data to answer their question.
  • As a follow up, have students create a table or chart with their own data, showing the difference in data between two different websites.
  • Have students present their findings to the class and discuss how they used the data to compare the two websites.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a topic that they are interested in (e.g. animal behavior, social media, sports) and find three different websites that are related to that topic.
  • Have students use Google Analytics to answer a question about their chosen topic (e.g. "Which of the three websites has the most visitors?").
  • Have students create a poster or presentation showing the results of their analysis and how they used the data to answer their question.

Closure:

  • Have students share their posters or presentations with the class.
  • Review the key concepts and skills learned during the lesson, including how to create a custom report in Google Analytics, how to interpret the data, and how to communicate findings through a visual representation.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to create a custom report, interpret data, and present findings.
  • Collect and review the posters or presentations created during the independent practice activity.
