Objectives & Outcomes:

  • Students will be able to create a business plan for a business that helps others.
  • Students will be able to estimate the costs of starting their business and plan for the money they need.
  • Students will be able to create a advertising plan to let people know about their business.

Materials

  • Writing paper
  • Pencils
  • Calculator
  • Business planning worksheets

Warm-Up

  • Have students sit in a circle.
  • Give each student a piece of paper and a pencil.
  • Give them a brief moment to think of a business idea that helps others.
  • Then, have them write their idea on the paper, and pass it to the person on their left.
  • This continues until everyone has a few ideas written down.
  • Then, have students share their ideas with the group and discuss which ideas might be the best to pursue.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that starting a business can be a difficult and risky process.
  • Discuss the importance of having a plan and knowing the costs associated with the business before beginning.
  • Provide the students with handouts with information on starting a business, including a business plan template and cost-estimating worksheets.
  • Go through each part of the business plan template, explaining what each part includes and how to fill it out.
  • Discuss the importance of advertising in attracting customers to the business.
  • Show the students some examples of different types of advertising and discuss how they might be used in their own business.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in small groups to create a business plan for a start-up company.
  • Assist the students as needed in filling out the business plan template and estimating the costs of the business.
  • Go over the business plans as a class, discussing the different parts and how they all work together to create a successful business.
  • Have the students create a marketing plan for their business, including both paid and organic advertising strategies.
  • Go over the marketing plans as a class, discussing the different strategies and how they will be used to attract customers to the business.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work on their business projects independently, either creating a physical or digital version of their business.
  • Encourage the students to think about their marketing strategy and how they will attract customers to their business.

Closure

  • Have the students share their business proposals with the class.
  • Ask the students to reflect on what they have learned about starting a business and how their project will help others.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice and give them feedback on their business proposals.
  • Collect the business proposals and use them to assess the students' understanding of starting a business.
