Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Handout with examples of products and services using the 4Ps
  • Markers or pens for participants to make their own marketing mix exercise materials

Warm-up

  • Ask the participants to think of a product or service that they regularly use or purchase.
  • Ask them to recall how the manufacturer or provider of the product or service promoted it to them.
  • Discuss the methods used to promote the product or service, such as advertising, discounts, or word of mouth.
  • Ask the participants if they think the methods used to promote the product or service were effective in getting their attention and encouraging them to purchase it.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the marketing mix, also known as the 4 Ps, and explain that it is a framework for understanding how a business can create value for its customers and make sure it has the necessary resources to succeed in the market.
  • Discuss each of the 4 Ps (product, price, place, and promotion) and give examples of how they can be used to create value for customers and compete in the market.
  • Provide examples of how different businesses in the same industry can use different combinations of the 4 Ps to differentiate themselves and compete more effectively.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a scenario with a specific business in a specific market.
  • Have the groups discuss the 4 Ps they would use and explain their reasoning.
  • Bring the class back together and have each group present their scenario and 4 Ps to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a specific product or service and create a marketing plan for it using the 4 Ps.
  • Students should use their planning to create marketing materials such as brochures, webpages, or advertisements.
  • Have students present their marketing materials to the class.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson and have students share any insights or learnings they had during the independent practice.
  • Encourage students to continue thinking about the 4 Ps and how they can be applied in real-world situations.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the group practice activity to assess their understanding of the 4 Ps.
  • Collect and review the written plan and strategy reports for understanding of the 4 Ps and their practical uses in marketing.
