Topic: Introduction to Coaching

Objectives & Outcomes

  • At the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand the basic responsibilities of a coach, as well as the benefits of being a coach.

Materials

  • Introduction to Coaching Handout (provided below)
  • Pen and paper for each student
  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Copies of the Introduction to Coaching Handout for each student

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have any prior experience being a coach or being coached. Allow a few students to share their experiences.
  • Ask students what they think it takes to be a good coach. Write their responses on the whiteboard or chalkboard.
  • Review the list of student responses and discuss what it takes to be a good coach.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of coaching and how it can be applied in various areas of life, such as sports, business, and personal development.
  • Discuss the importance of motivation in coaching and how it can be used to encourage and inspire others to achieve their goals.
  • Discuss the concept of leadership and how it can be applied in coaching.
  • Discuss the different roles and responsibilities of a coach, including setting goals, providing feedback, and motivating others.

Direct Instruction

  • Divide the class into small groups and assign each group a specific topic or area of coaching to discuss.
  • Have each group discuss their assigned topic and come up with examples of how coaching can be applied in that area.
  • Have each group present their findings to the class and discuss the different ways coaching can be applied in each area.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based independent practice activity. This could be creating a coaching plan for a specific sport or sports, or designing a coaching curriculum for a sports program.

Closure

  • Review the key concepts learned in the session, including the components of coaching, what it takes to be a good coach, and the importance of coaching education.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts on the importance of coaching and what makes a good coach.

Assessment

  • Observe students during their coaching practice sessions, taking note of their ability to apply the key concepts learned in the lesson.
  • Ask students to reflect on their own coaching experience and provide feedback on their performance.
