Topic: Classification of Business

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to classify businesses based on their functions and provide examples of each type.

Materials

• Chart with business categories (e.g. service, retail, manufacturing, etc.)
• Examples of businesses in each category (e.g. McDonald's for retail, Boeing for manufacturing, etc.)

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm a list of businesses they are familiar with. Write their responses on the board.
• Discuss the different types of businesses and the different functions they perform in the economy.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handout with the definitions and examples of the different sectors in the economy.
• Go over the definitions and examples with the class, making sure to provide examples of each sector and their characteristics.
• Discuss the importance of each sector in the economy and the factors that influence their development and growth.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a sector to research.
• Have each group create a presentation using PowerPoint or another presentation tool, including information about the sector they researched and its role in the economy.
• Have each group present their presentations to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one sector to research in depth.
• Have students create a report on their chosen sector, including information about its characteristics, size, and role in the economy.
• Have students submit their reports to the teacher for grading.

Closure

• Have students share one thing they learned about the different sectors in the economy.
• Review the main concepts covered in the lesson.
• Ask students to give their own definitions for sector and explain their importance in the economy.

Assessment

• Observe students during the sorting activity and take notes on their understanding of sector.
• Review the classifications students give for each sector and assess their understanding of the concept.
