Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the role of support in plants and its importance in the growth and development of a plant.

Materials

  • Plants (either live or plastic)
  • String
  • Pieces of cardboard or styrofoam
  • Scissors
  • Pencils or pens

Warm-up

  • Show the students a plant and ask them to observe its shape and how it stands upright.
  • Ask them how the plant is able to stand upright without falling over.
  • Encourage them to think about the role of support in plants.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of support in plants and explain that it is necessary for plants to stand upright and keep them from falling over.
  • Explain that there are different types of support in plants, such as the stem, which is the main support in plants, and the roots, which help plants to absorb nutrients and water.
  • Show the students the different parts of a plant and explain the role of each part in supporting the plant.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a plant seedling.
  • Have the students observe the seedling and identify the stem and roots.
  • Have the students trace the stem and roots on a piece of paper and label them.
  • Ask the students questions about the plant seedling such as: Where is the stem located? What are the roots used for?

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in groups and create a 3D model of a plant.
  • Have the students incorporate support into their model in order to make it stable.
  • Have the students present their models to the class and explain how they incorporated support into their model.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson (what is support, why is it important, examples of support in plants).
  • Ask the students to share something they learned during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the concept of support in plants.
  • Collect and review the students' written responses as a form of assessment.
