Welding Procedures Lesson Plan for 11th Grade Example Students

Topic: Welding procedures

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the different types of welding and their applications.

Materials

  • Arc welding machines
  • Welding electrodes of various types and sizes
  • Steel plate or beams for demonstration purposes

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they are familiar with welding and what it is used for.
  • Show them some examples of welded joints and discuss the benefits of welding over other joining techniques.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the different types of welding (e.g. MIG, TIG, stick, etc.).
  • Explain the different processes for each type of welding:
  • MIG welding: introduce the shielding gas and how it protects the weld from contamination; demonstrate the technique of making a MIG weld, including setting up the equipment and making a weld.
  • TIG welding: introduce the need for a filler material and the use of a tungsten electrode; demonstrate the technique of making a TIG weld, including setting up the equipment and making a weld.
  • Stick welding: introduce the use of a filler material and the key characteristics of stick welding; demonstrate the technique of making a stick weld, including setting up the equipment and making a weld.
  • Have students try out each of the welding techniques, either individually or in small groups.
  • Emphasize the importance of proper set-up and technique in achieving a sound weld.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to practice making welds using the different welding techniques taught in class.
  • Have students bring in samples of different types of materials (e.g. steel, aluminum, cast iron) and have them practice making welds on these materials.
  • Have students bring in a sketchbook and have them sketch out the set-up and technique for each type of welding discussed in class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one type of welding to focus on and create a project that demonstrates their skills with that type of welding. Possible project ideas could include creating a welded sculpture, welding together a small metal frame, or welding together a series of metal rings.

Closure

  • As a class, review the different types of welding discussed in the lesson and have students share their projects.
  • Ask students to reflect on what they learned about welding and how they can use these skills in the future.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the welding practice activity and provide feedback on their technique. Collect and review their finished projects to assess their understanding of the different types of welding and their ability to apply them in a practical setting.
