Topic: the rights and responsibilities of counselors

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to list the rights and responsibilities of counselors.

Materials

  • A list of the rights and responsibilities of counselors
  • Handout paper and pens or pencils

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever seen or met a counselor before.
  • Ask them to share their experiences and what they knew about counselors.
  • Write their responses on the board.
  • Explain to students that counselors are professionals who help people with personal, social and emotional issues.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that counselors have a responsibility to help people in a nonjudgmental and confidential manner.
  • Counselors must maintain confidentiality, which means they cannot share any information about their clients without their permission.
  • Counselors have a responsibility to provide appropriate and ethical advice and guidance to their clients.
  • Counselors must also ensure that their clients are making informed decisions and helping them to set realistic goals.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a scenario involving a client who is seeking counseling.
  • Have the groups discuss the possible actions and advice that a counselor could provide in this situation.
  • Have the groups present their scenarios and responses to the class.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a copy of a scenario involving a client who is seeking counseling.
  • Have the students work independently to create a counseling plan for the client, including identifying the client's problems and potential solutions, as well as identifying any additional resources (e.g. support groups, community services) that could be useful for the client.
  • Ask each student to present their counseling plan to the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the module, including the roles and responsibilities of counselors, the different models of counseling, and the different types of counseling techniques.
  • Ask the students to reflect on the importance of counseling in society and how they might use counseling skills in their own lives.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the group counseling activity and provide feedback on their use of counseling skills and their ability to work effectively as counselors.
  • Evaluate the students' independent practice projects based on their use of proper counseling techniques, their understanding of the different models of counseling, and their ability to apply the concepts in a real-world situation.
