Topic: Tools of Oceanography

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify and describe the tools of oceanography that was previously used and is currently used to explore the oceans.

Materials

• Images of tools of oceanography (e.g. submarines, research vessels, satellites)
• Handouts with descriptions of the tools

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever heard of oceanography. What do they know about it?
• Show them a picture of a research vessel and ask them to describe what they see. What are the tools used for?

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of oceanography and its importance.
• Explain that oceanography is the study of the oceans and their features, including their biology, chemistry, and physics.
• Introduce the tools of oceanography and explain their functions.
• Show pictures or videos of the tools in action and provide examples of how they are used.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and assign each group one of the tools of oceanography to research.
• Provide each group with a worksheet and have them answer questions about the tool they have been assigned, including its purpose and how it is used.
• Allow time for groups to share what they have learned with the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose one of the tools of oceanography to research further on their own.
• Provide students with a worksheet and have them answer questions about the tool they have chosen, including its purpose and how it is used.
• Allow time for students to complete the worksheet independently.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson and ask students to share what they have learned about the tools of oceanography.
• Encourage students to continue learning about oceanography on their own and to think about how the tools they have learned about are used in today's society.

Assessment:

• Collect and grade the group presentations for completeness and accuracy.
