Topic: geocaching

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to explain what geocaching is and how to use a geocaching app to find hidden treasure boxes.

Materials

• Android or iOS device with a geocaching app installed (e.g. 'GPS Treasure Hunt')
• Handouts with information about geocaching
• Pencils and paper for taking notes

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of geocaching before.
• Ask what they know about geocaching and write their answers on the board.
• Explain that geocaching is a hobby where people hunt for hidden treasure boxes using GPS coordinates.

Direct Instruction

• Show students how to use the GPS unit and how to input coordinates.
• Demonstrate how to use the GPS unit to find the hidden treasure box.
• Explain the importance of obeying the rules when geocaching, such as not disturbing wildlife and not trespassing.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to locate a hidden treasure box using the GPS unit and the coordinates provided.
• Have the pairs share their experience and any questions they have with the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in groups to create a geocaching trail at the school or in the local area.
• Each group will be given a set of coordinates and a description of the treasure box, and can use the GPS unit to track down the box.
• Have the groups present their geocaching trail to the class and answer any questions the class may have.

Closure

• Ask the students to reflect on what they learned during the lesson.
• Ask them to explain what geocaching is and give examples of the technology used.

Ask them to think about how they could use geocaching in the future.

• Review the key concepts of the lesson, including coordinates, GPS units, and geocaching.

Assessment

• Collect the students' written reports as an assessment of their understanding of geocaching.
• Observe the students during the independent practice activity to assess their understanding of using a GPS unit.
• Administer a quiz at a later date to assess their understanding of the basic concepts of geocaching.
