11th Grade Drawing Functions Lesson Plan Example (Math)

Topic: drawing functions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • To understand how to draw functions using a graphing calculator
  • To be able to identify the different parts of a function and its graph
  • To be able to sketch the graph of a given function

Materials

  • Graphing calculator
  • Pencil and paper for practice exercises

Warm-up

  • Ask the students to give examples of functions they have encountered in their studies so far. Write down their answers on the board.
  • Then, ask the students to give examples of the outputs of given inputs for a given function. Again, write down their answers on the board.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of a function and its input and output.
  • Define the domain and range of a function.
  • Provide examples of functions, including linear, quadratic, and exponential functions.
  • Use technology (such as graphing calculators or software) to graph functions and demonstrate how to identify the inputs and outputs, as well as the characteristics of the function (such as whether it is linear or non-linear, and whether it is increasing or decreasing).

Guided practice

  • Have students work in pairs to graph a function using technology.
  • Provide guidance and assistance as needed.

Independent practice

  • Have students choose one of the functions they graphed in the guided practice to draw without technology.
  • Encourage students to use their calculations and the graph of the function to help them draw the function accurately.

Closure

  • Have students share their drawings with the class and discuss how they used their calculations and the graph of the function to help them draw the function accurately.
  • Ask students to reflect on the importance of being able to graph a function using technology and by hand and the implications it has for their future studies and careers.

Assessment

  • Observe students as they work on their independent practice project and give feedback on their ability to accurately graph a function using technology and by hand.
  • Ask students to reflect on their growth in- Practicing and using various strategies to graph a function, and understanding the importance of being able to accurately graph a function using technology and by hand.
