Topic:DRAWING BAR GRAPHS

Objectives & Outcomes

• To understand how to use statistical data to draw bar graphs.

Materials

• Data in the form of numbers or words (can be real or fictitious)
• Graph paper
• Pencils
• Bar graph template (provided by teacher)

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm a list of items that can be represented using bar graphs (e.g. population of a country, sales of a product, etc.)
• Write their responses on the board.
• Ask students to explain the purpose of bar graphs and how they are used to represent data.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that bar graphs are used to visually represent data, and that they provide a way to quickly and easily compare data across categories.
• Introduce the concept of the scale, and explain how it is used to measure the data in the bar graph.
• Demonstrate how to correctly read a bar graph by identifying the categories and values on the scale.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a bar graph worksheet that provides them with a set of numerical data and asks them to create a bar graph that accurately represents the data.
• Walk around the room and provide assistance as needed to ensure that the students are able to correctly complete the bar graph.

Independent Practice

• Have students work in pairs to create a bar graph using statistical data that they have gathered or computed in a project-based activity.
• Encourage students to be creative and think critically about how to best represent their data in a bar graph.

Closure

• Have each pair present their bar graph to the class and discuss the choices they made in terms of data representation and formatting.
• Ask students to reflect on the process of creating a bar graph and consider the importance of using visuals to represent data.

Assessment

• Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their bar graphs.
• Use the completed bar graphs as a formative assessment to check for understanding of the process of creating a bar graph and the importance of using visuals to represent data.
