Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Copies of the argumentative text for each student
  • Handouts with instructions and guidelines for writing the argumentative text

Warm-up

  • Review the concept of persuasion and the different types of persuasion (logos, pathos, ethos).
  • Ask students to think of a time when they have been persuaded or have persuaded someone to do something.
  • Have a brief discussion about the different ways in which arguments can be persuasive.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the argumentative essay.
  • Define an argumentative essay as a type of writing that aims to convince the reader of a particular point of view on a topic.
  • Discuss the importance of using evidence and examples to support the main point of the argumentative essay.
  • Explain the different types of arguments, including deductive and inductive arguments.
  • Introduce the three parts of an argumentative essay: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to read and analyze a short argumentative essay.
  • Have them identify and underline the main point of the essay, as well as any evidence or examples used to support the main point.
  • Have them identify the introduction, body, and conclusion of the essay.
  • Have them discuss the effectiveness of the argumentative essay in convincing the reader of the main point.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to write their own argumentative essay on a topic of their choice.
  • Have them follow the steps in the model-writing process to write an effective argumentative essay.
  • Have them present their argumentative essays to the class for feedback and discussion.

  • Have students reflect on the process of writing the argumentative essays and the importance of using logical reasoning and evidence in argumentative writing.
