Topic: My Plate

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explain the purpose of My Plate and how it can be used to create healthy meals.

Materials

• Images of My Plate
• Recipe cards with healthy ingredients

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have heard of My Plate before.
• Ask them to list the different food groups that are shown on the plate.
• Ask them to explain the purpose of the plate.

Direct Instruction

• Explain to students that My Plate is a visual tool that helps people make healthy food choices.
• Explain that the different sections on the plate represent the different food groups that we should be eating each day.
• Explain that the My Plate website provides information about the recommended amount of food from each food group that we should be eating each day.
• Show students examples of how to use My Plate to create healthy dishes.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to create a healthy dish using My Plate as a guide.
• Have students present their dishes to the class and explain how they used My Plate to create their dish.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a specific type of meal (e.g. breakfast, lunch, dinner) and create three different healthy dishes for that meal using My Plate as a guide.
• Have students create a presentation to show their classmates their three healthy dishes and explain how they used My Plate to create their dishes.

Closure

• Review the key points of the lesson, including the different components of My Plate and how they can be used to create healthy dishes.
• Have students share one thing they learned about My Plate during the lesson.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the guided practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to create healthy dishes that are within the My Plate guidelines.
• Evaluate the posters created during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of My Plate to create healthy dishes.
