Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

• Images of a Dewey decimal system chart
• Examples of books organized using the Dewey decimal system

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever been to a library before.
• Ask students if they know how books are organized in a library.
• Write the following words on the board: alphabetical order, topic, subject.
• Ask students to share their ideas about how books are organized in a library.
• Write their ideas on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the Dewey decimal system and explain how it is used to organize books in a library.
• Show students a library catalog and explain how to use it to find books by their Dewey decimal classification.
• Explain how to use the online catalog to find books by their Dewey decimal classification.
• Show students how to use the online catalog to find books by their Dewey decimal classification.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to find books in the library's online catalog by their Dewey decimal classification.
• Have each pair come to the front of the class and show their work to the class.
• Have students discuss the differences and similarities between the two different ways of organizing books.

Independent Practice

• Have students work individually or in small groups to organize a small collection of books using the Dewey decimal system.
