  • Have students share what they read with a partner and discuss what the sentence might mean.
  • Ask for volunteers to share their interpretations with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of context-based vocabulary learning, explaining that understanding the context in which a word is used can help us understand its meaning.
  • Using the handout of key vocabulary words, go through each word and explain its meaning and usage in context, using examples from the text.
  • Ask students to take notes on the new vocabulary words and their meanings.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a section of the text to read and discuss.
  • Have them focus on the key vocabulary words and use the dictionary if needed to help them understand the full meaning of the words.
  • After reading and discussing, have each group present their key vocabulary words to the class and explain their meanings in context.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a list of vocabulary words that have not been covered in the text.
  • Have them look up the definitions and use the dictionary if needed to help them understand the full meaning of the words.
  • Have them create a short presentation (e.g. a slide show) in which they use the key vocabulary words in context to explain a passage from the text.

Closure

  • Review the key vocabulary words and their definitions.
  • Ask students to share any insights or new understandings they gained from creating their presentations.

Assessment

  • Students will be evaluated based on their participation in class discussions, their ability to accurately define vocabulary words, and the quality of their presentations.
  • Use the Venn diagram from the independent practice to assess students' understanding of the similarities and differences between the characters in the novel.
  • Use the presentations created for the independent practice to assess students' understanding of and ability to apply the vocabulary words in context.
