Free 11th Grade Reading Approach Lesson Plan (English)

Topic: Reading Approach

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe and analyze different reading approaches, including critical, literal, and creative.

Materials

  • Short passages on various topics (e.g. a poem, a news article, a story) that take different approaches to reading
  • Handouts with guiding questions for each reading approach

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think about a time when they felt really engaged while reading a book or a passage. What was it about the reading that made them feel that way?
  • Share a few examples of passages or books that take different approaches to reading. Ask students to consider what makes each approach effective or ineffective.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of reading approaches, explaining that there are a variety of ways that readers can approach a text.
  • Distribute the handout with definitions and examples of different reading approaches. Have students take a few minutes to review the definitions and examples.
  • As a class, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each reading approach. Emphasize the importance of understanding the reading approach that the author is using when reading any given text.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups. Provide each group with a text that employs a particular reading approach (e.g. a literary fiction novel for a literary approach, a non-fiction text for a pragmatic approach).
  • Have students work together to identify the reading approach being used and discuss how it impacts their reading experience.
  • Have each group share their findings with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose a text to read for school or for personal enjoyment. Have them use the reading approach they learned about in class to guide their reading.
  • Have students create a reflection document in which they describe their reading experience and how the reading approach impacted it. Possible format could be a written essay, a presentation, or a podcast.

Closure

  • Review the four reading approaches and their purposes. Ask students to share their reflection documents and discuss what they learned about using a reading approach to support their reading.

Assessment:

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of a reading approach and their ability to reflect on their reading. Collect and grade the reflection documents.
