Topic:Professions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to compare and contrast various professions and their corresponding duties and responsibilities.

Materials

  • Handouts with information about different professions (e.g. firefighter, nurse, engineer, teacher, etc.)
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of different professions they are familiar with. Write their answers on the board.
  • Ask students to share their top three choices and explain why they chose them.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of professional diversity and the vast array of different types of professions that exist in the world.
  • Provide examples of different professions and have students brainstorm more examples.
  • Discuss the educational requirements and skills needed for each profession.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a list of different professions.
  • Have each group research one of the professions and present their findings to the class.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and discuss the different requirements and skills needed for each profession.

Demonstration

  • Demonstrate the use of a career assessment tool such as the CareerOne™ - Career Assessment to determine the best suited profession for each student.
  • Walk through the steps of the career assessment tool and discuss the results with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the professions they learned about during the demonstration and create a project that demonstrates their understanding of the requirements and skills needed for that profession.
  • Examples could include a written description, a drawing, a brochure, or a video.

Closure

  • Review the main points covered during the demonstration and have students share their projects with the class.
  • Discuss the different requirements and skills needed for each profession and how they relate to the students' own career aspirations.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the guided practice activity and provide feedback on their ability to identify the requirements and skills needed for each profession.
  • Evaluate the projects created during the independent practice activity to assess students' understanding of the different requirements and skills needed for different professions.
