Present Perfect Activities Lesson Plan for 11th Grade Students

Topic: present perfect

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the present perfect tense and its uses.
  • Students will be able to conjugate verbs in the present perfect tense.

Materials

  • Grammar handout with examples of the present perfect tense
  • Pencils and paper for practice

Warm-up

  • Ask students to name some recent or ongoing events that they are familiar with (e.g. a school trip, a new movie release, a sports tournament).
  • Have students form small groups and ask them to list as many recent or ongoing events as they can think of.
  • After a few minutes, ask each group to share their list with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of the present perfect tense, explaining that it is used to describe an event that started in the past and continues until the present.
  • Give examples of the present perfect tense using the words "have" and "has" (e.g. "I have seen that movie" = I saw that movie at some point in the past and still know about it today).
  • Discuss the differences between the present perfect and the past tense (e.g. the past tense is used to describe an event that is over and done with, while the present perfect is used to describe an event that started in the past and continues until the present).

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups.
  • Give each group a set of present perfect tense flashcards or worksheets.
  • Have each group work together to identify the correct grammatical structure for each sentence (e.g. has/have + past participle).
  • Groups can then share their answers with the class and discuss any questions they have.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create their own present perfect tense flashcards or worksheets.
  • Students should identify the correct grammatical structure for each sentence and write a short sentence using the present perfect tense (e.g. I have finished my homework).
  • Allow students to work independently or in small groups to complete their flashcards or worksheets.

Closure

  • Review the present perfect tense with the students and ask them to give some examples of how it is used.

Assessment

  • Ask the students to write a short paragraph using the present perfect tense. Evaluate their use of the tense and provide feedback.
