Objectives & Outcomes

• Understand the key steps in the process of making notes and writing a summary from them
• Practice making notes and writing a summary from an unseen passage
• Use appropriate abbreviations when making notes
• Identify and use the main points in a passage to write a summary

Materials:

• Unseen passage
• Note-making outline (provided by the teacher)
• Pen or pencil

Warm-up

• Ask students to think about a time when they had to make notes and write a summary from an unseen passage.
• Ask them to share their experiences and any challenges they faced.
• Encourage them to share any handy strategies they used.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of note-making and summarization.
• Explain the importance of making detailed notes and then summarizing them to extract the main points.
• Demonstrate key note-making abbreviations, such as “NT” for “notetaking,” and “S” for “summary.”
• Show how to use the abbreviations to make notes on the passage.
• Demonstrate how to write a summary from the notes using the abbreviations.

Guided Practice

• Pass out the passage and have the students read it silently.
• Have them practice making notes using the key abbreviations.
• Ask them to write a summary of the passage from the notes.
• Have a few students present their summaries to the class for feedback.

Independent Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a different passage to read and take notes on.
