Topic: my learning

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand their own learning style and strategies and be able to apply them in different learning situations.

Materials

  • Chart paper and markers
  • Handouts with information about the different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, cognitive) and strategies (mapping, brainstorming, mind mapping, etc.)
  • Access to a computer with a word processing program or a writing tool (e.g. Google Docs, Word, Pages)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to take a few minutes to think about a recent school or homework assignment that they found challenging.
  • Then, have students share their thoughts with a partner.
  • After a few minutes of sharing, have a few volunteers share their discussions aloud with the class.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of learning styles and how they can affect academic performance.
  • Using the handout, go over the different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) and give examples of how each can be helpful in learning.
  • Emphasize the importance of recognizing our own learning styles and learning how to best use them to our advantage.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of questions related to the content being learned.
  • Have each group work together to come up with the answers, using their different learning styles to their advantage.
  • Once all the groups have finished, have them share their answers with the rest of the class and discuss any differences or similarities in how they approached the questions.
  • Encourage students to share any insights they gained about their own learning styles and how they can apply that knowledge in their future studies.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a set of learning styles tests to complete on their own.
  • Encourage them to think about how their different learning styles impact their study habits and approach to learning.
  • Allow students to work at their own pace and provide support as needed.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson, including the different learning styles and how they can affect study habits and approach to learning.
  • Ask students to reflect on their own learning styles and how they can use this knowledge to better meet their own learning needs.

Assessment

  • Evaluation of the student's participation in the group activity and their reflection on their own learning styles.
