        National Standards:

        • Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.7.1.B Conventions of Standard English

        Materials:

        • Whiteboard and markers
        • Sentence strips with examples of irregular verbs
        • Paper and pencils for students
        • Projector for multimedia presentation

        Warm-Up:

Ask students: "What is an irregular verb? How are irregular verbs different from regular verbs?" Allow students to share their thoughts and ideas with the class.

            Direct Instruction:

              1. Define irregular verbs as verbs that do not follow the usual pattern when changing tenses.

                2. Provide examples of irregular verbs and demonstrate how they change in different tenses (e.g. "go" changes to "went" in the past tense).

                  3. Explain the importance of using irregular verbs correctly in writing to ensure clarity and accuracy.

                    Guided Practice:

                      Active learning strategy: Verb Charades

                        1. Divide students into small groups.

                          2. Provide each group with a set of verb cards, including regular and irregular verbs.

                            3. One student in each group acts out the verb on the card without speaking, while the other group members guess the verb. This encourages students to actively engage with the irregular verbs and reinforces their understanding.

                              Independent Practice:

                                Project-based activity: Irregular Verb Story

                                  1. Ask students to create a short story using at least five irregular verbs.

                                    2. Encourage students to use the correct form of the irregular verbs in their story.

                                      3. Allow students to share their stories with the class, discussing how they incorporated the irregular verbs into their writing.

                                        Closure:

                                          Closure activity: Verb Quiz

                                            1. Give students a short quiz with sentences that contain irregular verbs.

                                              2. Students will identify the irregular verbs and write the correct form of the verb for each sentence.

                                                3. Review the quiz together as a class to reinforce their understanding of irregular verbs.

                                                  Assessment:

Assess students' understanding of irregular verbs through their participation in the Verb Charades activity, their completion of the Irregular Verb Story, and their performance on the Verb Quiz.
