Topic: Indigenous Ingenuity

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the concepts of indigenous ingenuity and inventiveness, and will be able to identify examples of these in FNMI communities in Canada.

Materials

  • Handout with examples of indigenous inventions and innovations (e.g. snow goggles, toboggans, ice fishing shelters)
  • Resources about FNMI communities in Canada (e.g. videos, images)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of inventions or innovations that they are familiar with.
  • Record their responses on the board.
  • Explain that today we will be exploring the concept of indigenous ingenuity and inventiveness, and will be looking at examples of these in FNMI communities in Canada.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the term "indigenous ingenuity" and explain that it refers to the ability of FNMI peoples to develop new and innovative solutions to address challenges and meet needs in their communities.
  • Provide examples of indigenous ingenuity, such as the invention of the snowmobile by FNMI peoples in northern Canada, and ask students to discuss the challenges these peoples were trying to address and the solutions they came up with.
  • Use the handouts to provide more examples of indigenous ingenuity and have students discuss the challenges these peoples were trying to address and the solutions they came up with.
  • Emphasize the importance of creativity and innovation in solving challenges and addressing needs, and the value of sharing these ideas with others to create a better world.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of challenges and needs to address.
  • Have students work together to come up with solutions, using the examples of indigenous ingenuity as inspiration.
  • Have each group present their solutions to the class and discuss the challenges they were trying to address and the solutions they came up with.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in small groups to come up with their own challenges and needs to address.
  • Have students come up with solutions to their challenges, using the examples of indigenous ingenuity as inspiration.
  • Have students create a project (e.g. a drawing, a poster, a presentation) to present their solutions to the class.

Closure

  • Review the different ways in which indigenous peoples have demonstrated ingenuity in solving problems and addressing needs.
  • Ask students to reflect on the importance of indigenous ingenuity in preserving cultural traditions and maintaining identity in the face of colonial oppression.
  • Remind students of the importance of indigenous ingenuity in finding solutions to challenges faced by FNMI communities in Canada today.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the group discussion and independent practice to assess their understanding of the topic.
  • Evaluate student presentations or written reports for their ability to demonstrate understanding of indigenous ingenuity and its importance in addressing challenges faced by FNMI communities.
