Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to explore ideas and opportunities for starting a business.

Materials

• Handout with brainstorming prompts for ideas for a business (e.g. "What do you enjoy doing?," "What problems do you see in your community?," "What do you enjoy buying/using?," "What skills/ talents do you have?," etc.)
• Writing paper and pencils/pens

Warm-up

• Ask students to share what they know about entrepreneurs and starting a business.
• Write their ideas on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that entrepreneurs are people who come up with ideas for new businesses and then take the steps to make those businesses a reality.
• Discuss the steps involved in starting a business, including researching the market, developing a business plan, and finding funding.
• Emphasize the importance of researching the market and developing a sound business plan, as these are the foundations of any successful business.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to brainstorm ideas for new businesses.
• Encourage them to use the skills they have learned to research the market and develop a business plan for their idea.
• As a group, they should also consider the financial resources they will need to start and operate their business.
• Have each group present their idea and plan to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based assignment in which they actually start a business.
• Encourage them to use the skills they have learned to research the market, develop a business plan, and find financial resources.
• Allow them to choose the business to start and the resources to use.

Closure

• Have students reflect on the process of starting a business and discuss any challenges they faced and how they were overcome.
• Ask them to share their final business plan and any unexpected successes they experienced.
• Encourage them to consider the importance of entrepreneurship and the role of creativity in starting a business.

Assessment

• Observe students during the 'brainstorming' and 'research' stages to assess their understanding of the process of starting a business and their ability to gather and evaluate information about different businesses.
